Despite leaving four weight classes unfilled, the Troup wrestling team nearly came away with a head-to-head victory over Starr’s Mill on Wednesday.

There were supposed to be three teams participating, but one of the teams didn’t show, so the only match was between Troup and the host school, Starr’s Mill.

Troup was unable to fill four of the weight classes, and that resulted in a loss of 24 points.

Despite that, the Tigers only lost by one point, 34-33.

“There were some times where we should have gotten some points, some bonus points instead of a win,” Troup head coach Chris Mitchem. “We could have won. But it was really good for our guys.”

The Tigers were coming off a solid performance in the Area 5-AAAA duals where, despite wrestling short-handed, they went 2-1 and finished fourth.

“The goal for the team is to just have constant improvement,” Mitchem said. “We’re just trying to take it step-by-step.”

The Tigers have some pretty big steps coming up.

They’ll host the county championship on Jan. 22, and they’ll compete in the traditional area tournament on Feb. 2.

Against Starr’s Mill, Troup had a bunch of highlights.

Cameron Cato won by pin at 113 pounds, Adam Love won on points at 132 pounds, Jadarius Smith won on points at 145 pounds, John Meachem won by pin at 152 pounds, Jonathan Scott won on points at 160 pounds, Tanius Harris won by pin at 170 pounds, and Michael Mackfield won by pin at 220 pounds.

One of Troup’s wrestlers who lost, 182-pounder Cassidy Carden, made a nice account of himself in a match against a state runnerup from last season.

Carden was competing well before getting pinned in the final period.

“About the middle of the third period, he got pinned,” Mitchem said. “He did a great job fighting. Unfortunately, he got him down and was able to pin him.”
