They were hoping to be playing for a tournament championship tonight, but instead, they’ll face Opelika (Ala.) for third place.
LaGrange’s title hopes were dashed by a 64-57 loss to W.D. Mohammed on Friday.
“We can go 2-1 and have a good tournament,” LaGrange head coach Mike Pauley said. “We’ve represented well.”
There will be four games today, leading up to the tournament championship at 7:30 p.m. between Hillgrove and W.D. Mohammed.
In today’s first game, Russell County will play St. Francis at 3 p.m. for seventh place.
In the second game at 4:30 p.m., Valley will take on Rockdale County for fifth place.
It’ll then be LaGrange vs. Opelika at 6 p.m., followed by the title matchup.
Hillgrove comes into the championship game on the heels of back-to-back blowout victories, although today’s game should be much more competitive against an unbeaten W.D. Mohammed team.
Hillgrove head coach Alfred Morris said he’s looking forward to the matchup.
“That’s what you want to do in these kinds of tournaments. You want to play good competition,” Morris said. “Hopefully this is going to prepare us for our region schedule in January.”
W.D. Mohammed, meanwhile, is tested after winning a close one over LaGrange.
“Hillgrove is a very great team. A lot of talent, a lot of athleticism,” W.D. Mohammed head coach Qur’An Shakir-Abdul-Khall said. “But I think we’re ready. I welcome the challenge.”
