Troup County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday appointed the county’s election supervisor for the newly formed elections board.

Following a closed executive session, commissioners named as elections supervisor Amy Hyatt, who has served as the county’s chief registrar for the last three years. Prior to heading the office of Voter Registration for Troup County, Hyatt worked in elections and the Probate Court since 2000.

The election supervisor position was created by the same Georgia legislation that created the new board of elections and registration. Commissioners voted last year to request the General Assembly create the board of elections and registration to conduct elections and voter registration for Troup County.

In Georgia, counties are required to form such a board once its population reaches 90,000. However, many counties in Georgia with less than the 90,000 population trigger have petitioned the legislature for approval to create the boards anyway, county officials said.

The Board of Elections and Registration was sworn into office Jan. 10. At that moment, the county’s Board of Registrars ceased to exist.

Troup Commissioners created the board to provide continuity throughout the entire electoral process from voter registration to candidate services to elections. With Hyatt’s 13 years experience and leadership, the Elections and Registration Office registers new voters and provides voter IDs, maintains records of legally registered voters, trains and manages poll workers, qualifies candidates and assists in ballot preparation, research provisional ballots, conduct elections for the county and all three municipalities in Troup County including early voting and transferring election data to the Secretary of State.
