The Troup Tigers broke through for their first Region 5-AAAA win of the season Friday night.

Facing Carrollton in a rematch of last year’s Region 6-AAA championship game, Troup got a strong effort from senior Lakeithin Buckner en route to a 61-53 victory over homestanding Carrollton.

Buckner delivered a 24-point performance, with 15 of those points coming in the second half.

Demetrious Trammell added 17 points, and Deontae Scott had 17 points and nine rebounds.

The game was tied 13-13 after the first quarter, and Troup led 26-25 at the half.

The Tigers grabbed control in the third period, outscoring the Trojans 20-13 to go up by eight heading into the final quarter.

The lead shrunk to two with 1:33 left, but Troup finished the game on a 9-3 run to pull away.

Troup went 7-of-8 from the free-throw line in the final 1:24 to salt the game away.

Buckner was 5-of-6 from the line in the closing moments.

In the girls’ game, Carrollton led 20-4 after the first period on the way to a 62-26 victory.

Jessica Gilbert and Deaushanique Sanders each had nine points to lead Troup.

Troup will be at home against Columbus today, with the girls’ game tipping at 6 p.m. and the boys’ game to follow.
