The Troup County Board of Education on Thursday approved hiring a new chief financial officer to replace retiring CFO Don Miller.
Byron Jones, current assistant superintendent of finance and operations for Meriwether County Schools, will take the reigns of the Troup County School System’s finances. Miller retires at the end of June.
Jones is a Troup native and lifelong resident who graduated from Troup High School. He has been with the Meriwether school system for six years and this will be his first job in a long time where he won’t have to commute, he said.
Jones said working for the Troup County School System is ” a compelling opportunity.” The Meriwether school system has about 3,000 students, while Troup has about 12,500, but both have dealt with similar issues with state funding.
“There are a lot of similarities” between the two school systems, Jones said. “I hope to make a positive impact for the school system.”
Troup and Meriwether also have consulted each other in the past on different programs and services that both implemented. Jones said he also had the additional duties in Meriwether County of operations, but his new job will focus on core finances.
“You have to look at the budget and tax digest and figure out what will work best,” Jones said. “In Meriwether County, that’s a bit different because there is a tax freeze in place – one of eight counties in the state to have that.”
Jones said it also will entail looking at class sizes to determine what is in the best interest of the students and look at the possibility of waivers.
“You have to go line by line over the budget every year,” he said. “That’s a good portion of what we’re doing.”
