Firefighters deliver pizza with a safety message
by Barbara Henigin
Staff Writer

The call came in at around 5:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and the LaGrange Firefighters prepared to, not respond to a fire but rather, to deliver a Domino’s Pizza.

As part of the recognition of Fire Prevention Week, the LaGrange Fire Department partnered with the National Fire Prevention Association and Domino’s Pizza to promote fire prevention with Domino’s customers being randomly selected for smoke alarm inspections and free pizza possibilities.

The Williams called in their dinner order with the Domino’s Pizza at 1861 Roanoke Road but didn’t expect a LaGrange fire truck to be accompanying their pizza. Domino’s Store Manager Ryan Daniel put their order together and handed it off to the usual Domino’s driver, Drew Stevens. Stevens then drove his truck around the parking lot and met up with three of LaGrange’s Firefighters who were waiting in their parked fire truck.

Lt. Christopher Taylor, Sgt. Paramedic Sean Guerrero and Firefighter EMT Mike Cosmah were happy to be part of this “pizza operation” and with Guerrero behind the wheel, led the way to the Williams’ residence. Just the appearance of the big red truck coming down the street elicited quite a stir in the neighborhood but it really got the attention of the Williams as it stopped by their house.

Daniel handed the wrapped dinner off to the firefighters and they then took it to the front door of the residence. At the door, Taylor gave the family a short explanation of the program and after the family consented to participate, the three firefighters were invited in.

The smoke detectors were inspected and after determining that they were properly installed and in working order, the family’s dinner was given to them compliments of Domino’s Pizza. The Williams family was rewarded for paying attention to the details that will help keep them safe.

Although this pizza program ended yesterday, the LaGrange Fire Department has many other events planned throughout this month to help remind people how important fire prevention is to all of us. Members of the department give educational talks to school and civic groups as well as sponsoring smoke alarm inspections and installations.

You may not have a free pizza but you do have the message, make sure your smoke detectors are in working order.
