New food, shopping choices coming to LaGrange
by Barbara Henigin
Staff Writer

With the arrival of Sammy D’s Original New York Pizzeria, American Deli and Aldi, LaGrange residents will soon have a variety of new, reasonably priced, taste sensations and more discount grocery shopping choices available to them.

Sammy D’s

Sammy D’s Original New York Pizzeria, located at 1525 Vernon Road, is getting ready to open later this month. The restaurant is owned by partners Sammy Deusch and Jim Hunt, with Deusch serving as chef.

“My family is originally from Naples, Italy, and my grandfather, who was also a chef, started teaching me how to cook when I was 7 years-old,” Deusch said. “I later graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York.”

Sammy D’s will be offering an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet and a large selection of menu items which include salads, calzones, appetizers, hot and cold subs, pasta and specialty pizzas. All of their food items will be made fresh daily and the pizzas cooked in stone ovens.

“Our aim is to feed folks with top quality food at a reasonable, fair price,” Deusch said. “All of our breads, rolls, sauces, specials and desserts are made from scratch. Jim’s kids, Max, Isabella and James, and my kids Anthony and my youngest, who we call ‘Sammy the Bull’ all have specialty pizza items named for them on our menu.”

Sammy D’s will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday and Saturday. They will be closed on Sundays. The restaurant is also licensed to sell beer and wine.

American Deli

American Deli, located at 217 New Franklin Road, opened for business on March 26. This LaGrange franchise is owned by the Adams family, Roosevelt, Carol and their son, Jermaine.

“We are the original owners of the KFC that was here, we have owned this building for the past 25 years,” Jermaine Adams said. “KFC started to slow down so we wanted to put something in here that would fit with what LaGrange needed. The American Deli made sense. We now have wings, fish, shrimp, Philly-steaks, a variety of subs and sandwiches and even salads. We are a one-stop restaurant and all of our food items are cooked to the specific requests of our customers.”

Adams said that he is still getting the restaurant ready for the grand opening.

American Deli is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday and Saturday they are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and are closed on Sundays.

Adli

On the corner of Mooty Bridge and New Franklin Road, Morgan Construction Company is preparing for the arrival of the new Aldi grocery store. Morgan Construction Superintendent Terry Leavell supervises the ongoing construction work.

Morgan Construction is the project’s general contractor and will be using labor from both the local and Atlanta areas.

“Aldi food store will be here, within the next two weeks there should be signs up advertising for it,” Leavell said. “Right now we are looking to open around mid to late August.”

Aldi is a food store that is known for selling items at discounted prices. They offer many products under their own name brand which they claim saves the consumer up to 50 percent over national brands. The new Aldi store will be on the property of the former Nissan dealership, which has moved to Commerce Avenue.

Memorable season for Tigers
STONE MOUNTAIN - It was one heck of a ride. The Troup Tigers didn’t win a state championship, which was the number one goal for every player and coach on the team. While that goal wasn’t achieved, there’s no question that when the pain of Tuesday’s semifinal loss to Redan wears off, everyone as...
