Sherri Brown | Daily News Leaders of the local veterans organizations lay a wreath during Monday’s Memorial Day services at Southview cemetery. The wreath was laid at the grave of Raymond Skinner, an Army veteran who served in Vietnam.

About 100 people gathered at Southview cemetery to remember and honor fallen soldiers, veterans and military personnel.

Led by leaders of local veterans groups, the annual ceremony included the laying of a wreath on a soldier’s grave. This year, the wreath was laid at the grave of Raymond Skinner, who served more than 20 years in the Army, including a time in Vietnam.

Skinner was an airborne instructor, a master parachutist and a Vietnam veteran who received the O/S Bar medal, the Bronze Star, the Air medal and the good conduct medal.

“What greater sacrifice is there than to give your life in war so that future generations can live in peace,” said Dan Holtz, the guest speaker at the ceremony and the assistant commissioner at the Georgia Department of Veterans Service.

“We recognize the men and women for their service to the nation. Regardless of your view on the war, that is a good thing,” he said. “We enjoy our lives because of all those who have died in service to our country.”

Since Memorial Day last year, 11 Georgia soldiers have died.

“Renew your dedication to the men and women who gave their lives,” Holtz said.

The annual Memorial Day service is held at a different cemetery each year.
