Theta Xi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s 20th parade to honor Dr. Martin Luther King was met with warm weather and enthusiastic parade participants and spectators.
Saturday’s above normal temperatures just encouraged that many more people to attend and to participate in this year’s parade.
“The participation has been great this year, there was originally about 32 entries registered but today more showed up, I think we now have 40 entries,” parade chairperson Yvonne Pittman said. “Each year we have more and more people come out to take part in the parade.”
Usually Pittman is so busy with organizing all of the parade participants at Granger Park, she misses actually seeing the finished product. This year she and sorority president Melanie Traylor were able to drive in the parade. Traylor drove her bright red minivan behind the LaGrange fire truck.
Spectators ranged from all ages, but all were there for the same purpose, to give honor to the man who made such a difference in the history of this country. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
