LaGrange Police continue to investigate incidents of entering auto in northwest LaGrange after a man was arrested for allegedly breaking into a Toyota Camry on Cherokee Road Monday.
Edwin Barnes, 33, of Lanett, Ala., is charged with 11 counts of entering auto and one count of burglary. Investigators said a loaded assault rifle, later determined to be stolen from West Point, was among the property recovered from two of Barnes’ LaGrange residences.
Barnes was arrested after an ongoing investigation of entering autos in Northwest LaGrange, particularly the area of Cherokee Road. LaGrange police investigators and K-9 units spotted the suspect as he allegedly broke into a vehicle about 3:30 a.m. Monday before fleeing.
He was found hours later on the back porch of a residence on Edmonson Avenue, hiding behind a hot tub, Sgt. Marshall McCoy said.
“Once it became daylight, residents reported seeing him,” McCoy said, adding that the suspect traveled by bicycle.
Barnes was recently released from prison for drug charges from 2009. LaGrange police are working with agencies in West Point and Lanett on the case. Police said additional charges are likely as the investigation continues.
