Budget proposals: Unity, art, music could be on chopping block
by Matthew Strother
News editor

Troup County School System staff are expected to present a proposal for budget options tonight to help offset a projected $3.2 to $4 million deficit next fiscal year that includes closing an elementary school or eliminating elementary-level art and music.

The proposal, a written version of which was given to media at the beginning of tonight’s meeting, shows among plans two options. Plan A includes a proposal to eliminate extension teachers and art and music in elementary schools, which would save about $3 million combined, and increase the millage rate, which, if raised by 1 mill, is expected to generate $1.8 million.

Plan B includes closing Unity Elementary School, a $1.1 million expected savings, while reconfiguring school zones and improving other elementary school sites to create fewer, larger, more-efficient campuses. Staff had not presented the options to Board of Education members as of this writing.

I agree with you Suebee, I tried to get 4 new ones into the B. O. E. this past election, only succeeded with one. That was one one of the things I was telling people, we have has our same group in here for up to 20 years, and look at the mess our system is in. We recently had another chance in Debbie Santiago..all are highly qualified to hold this position. All jobs in our government have their own degree of importance, but this ranks the highest in my book. If we could get our kids a good education, that one thing alone would " fix " so many problems, jobs, unemployment, crime. etc.....Our present group in the B. O. E. have had 20 years to " fix " the problem and their " solutu ion" has always been to keep " throwing taxpayer money" at it....that is NOT the answer.

Well the cuts will continue. As long as your doing wrong its not gonna work. I was there the night for the closing of the Cannon St school. This decision was wrong. no cutting of the salary of the supertindent. he was brought here as if no cuts was about to happen. especially when there was already qualified people could have done the job. but until it affect you. you will not feel the pain. GOD DON'T LIKE WRONG GOING.

Ok, so they have cut teachers' salaries...

They have closed other schools...

They have changed bus routes...

They have cut out the SRO at LCMS...

All of these and MANY more things have been done, in effort to cut the budget..

The one thing I have not heard is cutting salaries of the overpaid Superintendent and others in the higher pay brackets???

Why is this?...If these people truely are in these positions, because they care about the kids...They would not want to continue cutting out the things that benefit the kids...I don't understand how we could not get new board members elected, when obviously they are needed.

You hit the nail on the head with that comment. I say ni pay until the budget is balanced. The easy way for this is for people within the city limits to pay property taxes.
