Troup to consider retail recruitment agreement
by Matthew Strother
News editor

Troup County Commission on Tuesday is expected to vote on investing $12,500 for a Chamber of Commerce-contracted study and recruitment group to help attract retailers to Troup County.

Page Estes, LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce president, said the Chamber has found a lot of people won’t move to Troup County because of a lack of shopping options. The amount in special-purpose, local-option sales tax revenue that the county is missing out on from people who choose to shop in surrounding areas amounts to about $350 million, she said.

The chamber wants to contract with Retail Strategies of Birmingham, Ala., for a three-year, $94,850, agreement to implement studies for retail options and recruit retailers for the area. The city of LaGrange already has agreed to pay $12,500, or 25 percent of the first year of the contract, while the LaGrange Downtown Development Authorities has agreed to contribute $2,000. In West Point, the city, DDA and Industrial Development Authority have pledged a collective $5,000. The chamber plans to approach Hogansville for a contribution if Troup throws in the $12,500.

County leaders said the $12,500 could be paid from the county’s hotel-motel tax fund collected locally.

Well its about time!! Columbus, Auburn, and Newnan have been getting our tax dollars for years. Just try to find quality children's shoes in LaGrange. There's only one place to get them and they are overpriced. It's pitiful that a town this size has been held back for so long.

Memorable season for Tigers
STONE MOUNTAIN - It was one heck of a ride. The Troup Tigers didn’t win a state championship, which was the number one goal for every player and coach on the team. While that goal wasn’t achieved, there’s no question that when the pain of Tuesday’s semifinal loss to Redan wears off, everyone as...
