John C. “Jack” Leidner, a Hogansville City Council member since 2001, will announce at tonight’s regular meeting he is resigning his seat, effective Aug. 20.
Leidner was last reelected in November 2011.
He cites personal and health reasons for stepping down, but says he’s waiting until August to “finish what council gave me.”
“Over the next 90+ days, I will continue to investigate the lowering of utility rates via possible outsourcing as directed by the council and finish the negotiations for Hogansville’s new sewer plant. I will also continue to help in the efforts to start the Troup County College and Career Academy and fulfill my duties as mayor pro-tem,” he said in a letter to Mayor Jimmy Jackson.
Leidner has been filling in as mayor pro-tem while Jackson has been absent from the city with prolonged medical issues.
The timing of the resignation means the city can fill Leidner’s seat at the same time of its next municipal election in November and not hold a special election. Leidner said that’s another reason he chose that date.
“I didn’t want to stick Hogansville with $20,000 (for a special election),” he said.
