Over 200 volunteers gathered Saturday for Great American Cleanup celebration for Keep Troup Beautiful.
“We were very pleased with the number of volunteers attending and know that we will have many more over the few weeks,” said Doris Jefferson, executive director for KTB. Some volunteer groups had postponed their cleanup or had done theirs in previous days.
The volunteers were spread out at more than 15 locations throughout LaGrange and gathered over 500 bags of litter and trash and 7,500 pounds of tires.
Ten sixth-and eighth-grade students in Gardner Newman Middle School’s Service Club gathered five bags of trash near and on the school’s campus allowing them to win the category of ‘percent of bags to participants.’
“It’s fun cleaning up,” said sixth-grade student Kaylee Key. “Just the thought that you’re cleaning your school and people appreciate it is good.”
The students were amazed at the amount of trash found around the bleachers of the football field.
“People need to learn how to make it to the trash at games,” one student yelled.
Under and around the bleachers, the group found a shirt, bottles, cans, miscellaneous trash, and a fence, in which they submitted in the ‘most unusual item’ category.
Long Cane Middle School, however won in the category for a second year in a row. LCMS student Gracie Cotton also won a small tablet in the grand prize drawing.
“It was very successful and we’re expecting to have a lot more areas cleaned up and more people participating by May,” said Jefferson.
Before the program ends May 15 Jefferson predicts that more more trash will have been collected than in 2012 since larger corporations such as KIA will be performing their clean up later this month. Hogansville and West Point will hold their event on April 20.
