In front of about 50 family members and supporters, Troup County’s Sheriff-elect James Woodruff was sworn into office Friday at the Troup County Government Center.
“I look forward to serving you and being your voice in the community,” said Woodruff, to many of those who had supported him through four elections to reach the office: a primary, runoff to the primary, general election and runoff to the general election.
The crowd gave Woodruff a standing ovation when the oath was complete, and many stayed to have their picture taken with the county’s highest law enforcement official.
“I would not be here today if it wasn’t for your support,” he said. “You came out four times to support me.”
Woodruff officially takes office at midnight on Tuesday, the first day of the new year. He said he and his newly appointed chief deputy, Jon Whitney, will walk in the sheriff’s office on Sam Walker Drive at that appointed hour to “see what we are getting.” Woodruff has worked in law enforcement for all of his career, including as chief deputy at the Troup County Sheriff’s office. He most recently worked at the Troup County Correctional Institution before being elected.
Woodruff said he wants only to serve the community.
“I’ve always had a heart to serve people,” he said. “It’s been my desire to truly serve the people. We will have a transparent office. It means a lot that the people stood behind me and I appreciate their confidence in me.”
