When she first created the event, via Facebook, Lindsey Elkins was afraid there wouldn’t be enough people to pet the animals coming to LaGrange College for “Pause for Paws” on Wednesday.
By the time everyone crowded into the student lounge, “The Boopie,” she was afraid there weren’t enough dogs and cats for all the humans.
Elkins, sponsor of the newly formed LaGrange College Humane Society, held the first Pause for Paws event Wednesday as a way for students to relax with the animals from the LaGrange-Troup County Humane Society and LaGrange Animal Shelter before finals begin.
By all accounts, it was a success.
“I call it fuzzy therapy,” said Katie Elder, president of the college humane society.
The college formed its own humane society to raise awareness of animal issues and laws affecting animals, such as the city’s pit bull ordinance. They also want to recruit people to volunteer at the shelter.
“If you just take a dog out, they love it,” she said. “It’s service and stress relief.”
The college humane society had about 15 people show up to its first meeting and is expecting more in the fall semester.
“An animal is a sure way to get to someone’s heart,” said Caitlyn Kious, secretary of the college humane society.
