Police followed the vehicle down Young’s Mill and Hogansville roads into Hogansville at speeds of 110 miles per hour, police said. Police stopped the vehicle in Hogansville with the help of stop sticks at an intersection.
The driver was charged with criminal trespass, reckless driving, and fleeing and attempting to elude police.
Crash snaps
utility pole in two
A man was charged with striking a fixed object and failure to maintain lane after his truck hit a utility pole in the 800 block of Troup Street on Monday morning. Police found the truck with both airbags deployed but no one inside.
Officers described the utility pole as “snapped in two.” The driver had left on foot before returning. He told police he had fallen asleep while driving and that he went to notify the truck’s owner after the crash, a friend who lives close to the scene of the accident.
No serious injuries were reported.
Theft
A thief stole a dog trap valued at $250 from Sunridge Apartments at 1235 Hogansville Road. The trap had been placed outside to catch stray dogs.
Shoplifting
A Wal-Mart employee at 803 New Franklin Road watched a man conceal a video camera valued at $97 and sunglasses valued at $11 under his jacket and attempt to leave the store without paying. The man was charged with shoplifting.
Fires
• A 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass burst into flames on Peachtree Street about 8:40 a.m. Monday, possibly be-cause of an oil leak, but there were no injuries. The fire occurred shortly after the unidentified driver borrowed the car from Mattie Terry of 205 Peachtree St.
• Two people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire reported at 11:26 Monday at the home of Jody Stapler at 1106 Truitt Ave. Firefighters said a comforter had been hung in the kitchen doorway to trap heat, but the comforter fell and was ignited by a candle sitting atop an unplugged space heater. Damage was confined to the kitchen area.
