Troup County Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shooting death of a LaGrange man.

Matthew Piper, 20, decided to walk to a nearby pizza restaurant about 10 p.m. Saturday while staying with his grandmother at her Amberwood Apartments residence at 815 N. Greenwood St.

He was shot several times in the chest and abdomen and was found lying unconscious in the street in the 100 block of Mitchell Avenue.

LaGrange fire and Troup Emergency Management personnel attempted to resuscitate Piper before he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses who heard the gunshots saw two black males flee in a white vehicle, which appeared to be a 1990s model Toyota, according to police.

“We still don’t have any definite suspects,” police detective Dale Strickland said. “But there are leads. At this point, we don’t want to say too much.”

Piper’s body was sent to the state crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy Monday morning. Results are pending, but a few law enforcement officials were present during the autopsy.

“He obviously died from the gunshot wounds,” Strickland said. “But the official results probably won’t be back until some time.”

n Anyone with information on the killing was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (706) 812-1000 or police at (706) 883-2603.

Kenneth Thompson can be reached at kethompson@ lagrangenews or (706) 884-7311, Ext. 228.
