Georgians can expect one more night of cold weather before the mercury rises a bit.

The temperature today in Atlanta broke the record low for the date, and some north Georgia schools were closed as a cold spell continued across the state.

Schools in Fannin, Gilmer, Pickens, Rabun, Towns and Union counties closed as roads remained icy across north Georgia.

The temperature at LaGrange-Callaway Airport was 16 at 7:30 this morning. The record for the date is 13, set in 1962.

The early-morning temperature in Atlanta dropped to 14, breaking the record low of 15 for Dec. 14, set in 1917. The temperature in Blairsville was 9. Gainesville and Marietta reported 14 degrees at 8 a.m.

The forecast for Troup County calls for cloudy skies tonight, a low in the upper teens and light winds.

The mercury should reach the lower 40s Wednesday, and there’s a 50 percent chance of rain and freezing rain in the evening.

More seasonable weather is on tap for the rest of the week - highs near 60 and lows around 40. There’s a chance of rain through Saturday.
