Troup County firefighters responded to a traffic accident that killed two people and injured four others late Sunday night on Interstate 85 at the Grantville exit.

Fire Capt. Early Harris and state troopers said a northbound Honda Civic crossed the median and struck a southbound Ford Econoline van head on just after 11 p.m. One person was trapped in a vehicle and it took about 30 minutes to get him out, Harris said.

Brandon Mailman, 22, from Columbus, the driver of the Civic and passenger Christine Moore, 33, from Cumming, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Coweta County coroner. Another passenger in the vehicle had no injuries.

Gaylen Pike, 44, from Columbus, the driver of the van, and passengers Linda Davis, 48 from Chicago, and James Dillon, 18, were injured. Two were flown to Atlanta Medical Center and one was transported to a Newnan hospital.

Conditions were unavailable this morning.

Alcohol was a factor in the accident according to a spokeswoman from the Georgia State Patrol.
