More trees, but fewer electronics were recycled during the annual “Bring One for the Chipper” program conducted by Keep Troup Beautiful.

“We concluded that people upgraded (electronics) last year and weren’t up-grading this year because of the economy,” KTB Executive Director Doris Jefferson said. “The weather was horrid also and people have not wanted to get out in this weather.”

She said 5 tons of electronics were processed last year and less than half of that amount this year.

About 300 Christmas trees were converted into mulch, rather than disposed of at the landfill, about 50 more than last year, Jefferson said.

Home Depot on Lafayette Parkway accepted Christmas trees from Dec. 26 through Saturday. The main event was Saturday when people also could take electronics to Home Depot for proper disposal, as well as locations in West Point and Hogansville.

The LaGrange Recycling Center on North Davis Road accepts electronics throughout the year.

Jefferson expressed thanks to the volunteers, including the Troup High School baseball team, and Keep Troup Beautiful board members, who helped with the recycling effort. Local sponsors, in addition to Home Depot, included the cities of LaGrange, West Point and Hogansville.
