City of LaGrange leaders hope to find a new tenant for the former post office building at 200 Church St., but so far have no serious prospects for the space vacated by Multicast Media Networks in September.

“It has been up for lease several months now, but the sign was put up in November,” City Manager Tom Hall said. “If no one leases it within the next few months, then we will most likely list it with a real estate agent. We haven’t marketed it yet because we have been busy cleaning it.”

Multicast, an Atlanta-based online video service provider, had its headquarters in the building for seven years, but relocated last year after changing its business model. The company switched from hardware hosting to selling software and didn’t need the building’s server space any more, Hall said.

The city acquired the building after the post office relocated to Calumet Place.

Multicast was attracted to LaGrange after the city was honored as “Intelligent City of the Year” by the Intelligent City Forum, said chairman and CEO Lou Schwartz.

The building continues to house the city’s LGTV cable station, an environmentally controlled room featuring back-up power generators, specialized power protection equipment and several servers used by the city. It now has 4,700 square feet of space available for lease of office space and more than 2,000 square feet in its control room.

“The building is properly zoned for any commercial or retail establishment,” Hall said. “We aren’t looking for anything specific, though, for the office space. But we are talking to some people interested in the control room space.”

The cost of a lease isn’t set, he said. “It will vary with the state of the market.”

Hall said the city was prepared when Multicast left.

“They gave us adequate time in letting us know they were moving,” he said. “So we knew about it going into this year’s budget.”
