Tonya Towanda Bray, 37, of Laurel Crossing Apartments was driving on Ragland Street near the intersection of Berry Hill Circle.
Witnesses told police that Jeffrey Dewayne Jones, 37, of Stovall Road in Meriwether County chased Bray down Ragland Street in his own vehicle, pulling up beside her and shooting her, police said. Bray’s car wound up in the ditch on the southbound side of Ragland Street. Jones drove off and turned himself in.
The call originally was made to police as a traffic accident with injuries, but officers found Bray dead of a gunshot wound, and several bullet holes in her car, said police Capt. Dale Strickland. She was taken to West Georgia Medical Center and pronounced dead.
The couple had been separated for six months and had two children together, Strickland said. Police believe the killing was the result of a domestic dispute.
Bray was the mother of Quan Bray, a Troup High School graduate who is an incoming freshman at Auburn University, where he is to play football.
Auburn coach Gene Chizik said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with Quan and his entire family during this extraordinarily difficult time. This is a terrible tragedy, but the Auburn family will support Quan in every way possible throughout the grieving and healing process ahead. Quan is a great young man with a bright future, and we will be there for him every step of the way.”
A page on the social networking site Facebook, called In Loving Memory of Tonya Bray, was set up by late Sunday and tributes were being posted to Bray and her family.
It’s the second killing this year in LaGrange and the second one that police attribute to a domestic dispute. Shelley Renee Johnson, 37, was killed May 5. Her estranged husband, Jacob Johnson, 43, of Dadeville, Ala., also turned himself in at the Troup County Jail. Shelley Johnson, who was separated from her husband, was shot in her Hogansville Road apartment.
