Callaway only had six wrestlers because of injury problems, so it didn’t have the opportunity to win a dual match.
However, three wrestlers won against Heard and all six won in their matches against Newnan, the other team that participated.
Zach McIntyre (189 pounds), Brandon Hontz (103 pounds) and Ryan Kiss (112) won their matchups with Heard County.
Those three, along with Timmy Osborne (125), Calvin Moody (145) and Conner Vaught (171) won their matchups with Newnan.
It was a good showing by Callaway, but because of its depleted six-man roster due to injuries, winning wasn’t an option.
“We knew we couldn’t win going in because of the sheer numbers,” Callaway coach J.J. Wahl said. “I told them to go out and win their matches, and they did. I can’t complain about that.”
The injury front is beginning to lessen, as several Cavaliers will be returning from injuries this week.
Golden Sutton, Terrell Daniel and Justin Smith will all be available for next Tuesday’s meet, so the team will be in good shape to come out on top of some matches.
“They’ve been conditioning hard and are in good shape,” Wahl said. “If all nine of them win in the next meet, we’ll win the whole thing. They’re a huge key to our success.
