The president of the Troup County chapter of the NAACP called for a “new consciousness” in the wake of today’s inauguration of Barack Obama as president.

“The change has got to start in this community – to feed the hungry, find shelter for the homeless, good health care and education,” Eddie Fannin said Monday at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration at Warren Temple United Methodist Church on East Depot Street.

“We have all got to pull together,” said Fannin, a former longtime LaGrange police officer who is now operations manager for Security Forces Inc. in Decatur. “We have got to keep the faith. True faith is confidence in God or Christ and not in ourselves.”

He said it’s “time for a new consciousness, a collective belief system that will encourage all of us to participate in building a new community.”

“We will begin sprouting branches that will be able to bear fruit, that will protect our weakest,” he said. “We are a people who have been slaves to fashion and trends for as long as we can remember. We can use this consciousness to create a new trend: making it fashionable for us to work together.”

Also at Monday’s church service, Fannin pleaded for information about the slaying of Matthew Piper, 20, who was gunned down on Mitchell Street while walking home Dec. 27.

Fannin urged anyone with information to contact LaGrange police, Crime Stoppers at (706) 812-1000) or any member of the NAACP.
