Budget hearings wrap up at Georgia Capitol

ATLANTA (AP) — Social services and health care are on the agenda as budget hearings wrap up at the Georgia Capitol.
Georgia is concluding three days of budget hearings as lawmakers grapple with how to slice about $2 billion from Georgia’s budget. The recession has led to plummeting revenues in Georgia and the state is looking to fill the largest budget shortfall in its history.
The state Department of Human Resources is expected to face questions about cuts to child welfare and programs for the elderly. Medicaid is expected to take center stage when officials with the Department of Community Health testify.
Gov. Sonny Perdue has proposed a fee on hospitals and health insurance plans to avoid steep Medicaid cuts. But some Republican state lawmakers have pledged to fight the governor’s plan.
