Local scout troops are gearing up for the annual “Scouting for Food” drive to benefit the Interfaith Food Closet.

Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will distribute collection bags in LaGrange neighborhoods on Feb. 7, then return between 9 and 11 a.m. Feb. 14 to pick up bags filled with donated items. Filled bags should be left on doorsteps or at mailboxes.

Keener Lynn, chairman of the Scouts’ Yellow Jacket District, said the food drive fits the Boy Scout motto, “Be Prepared.”

“Although we have no pending crisis, we should realize that now more than any other time in our lives, we should keep the local food closet fully stocked at all times,” he said.

The project is rooted in a core Scouting concept - “Do a Good Turn Daily,” said district director Rodney Brundidge.

“Young people need to serve. The level of community service is a good indication of the health of any society. Scouting has, from its inception, been deeply rooted in the concept of doing for others,” Brundidge said.

Barbara Hand, coordinator of the Interfaith Food Closet, said Scouting for Food is very important to her operation.

“We feed people all year long, not just during a crisis or at Thanksgiving and Christmas. The food we receive from ‘Scouting For Food’ will help carry us through the year,” she said.

In addition to neighborhood pickup, Scouts will collect donations from several local churches and banks. Only nonperishable cans of food and dry goods will be collected.

Suggested food donations include canned soups, canned vegetables, canned meats, canned stews, and dry goods such as boxed macaroni and cheese, spaghetti noodles, rice and dried beans. Packages of sugar or flour should be individually bagged to prevent spillage.

Anyone wishing to donate was asked to drop off food at the Food Closet at 416 Pierce St. between 9 a.m. and noon Feb. 14.
