ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — A 15-year-old has pleaded guilty to hitting and killing a Clarke County woman as she walked along a road with her 3-year-old son.
Abel Gonzalez-Perez pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI and hit-and-run. Nayasheika “Keisha” Cooper, who was 19, died after being hit from behind in the June 14 accident.
Prosecutors say Gonzalez-Perez was working illegally in the United States. He was tried as an adult and accepted prosecutors’ recommendation that he spend as many as eight years in prison and seven more on probation.
His lawyer, James Smith of Athens, did not immediately return a call seeking comment Tuesday.
Athens-Clarke County Superior Court Judge Steve Jones accepted the plea but says he will hear from Cooper’s family before sentencing next month.
