There was never any doubt.
Once the Georgia Bulldogs offered Troup offensive lineman Chris Burnette a football scholarship, he knew where he was going.
“There was no question when Georgia offered me,” Burnette said.
Today in a ceremony at Troup High, Burnette made if official, signing his letter of intent to play for the Bulldogs.
Burnette was joined by seven other Troup players who signed their letters.
Also today, four LaGrange Grangers signed, with Qua Huzzie, Demetri Merritt and Tristian Johnson each signing with Kentucky.
Callaway’s lone signee was fullback Tharius Tigner, who is going to Fort Valley State.
For Troup, defensive lineman Tay Irvin signed with Central Florida, and defensive lineman Denzel Turner is headed to Tuskegee.
Other Tigers who signed were linebacker Avery Smith and defensive end LeAndre Crawford, who will both join Alabama State.
Tight end Marcus Williams signed on to play football and basketball at West Hills College in Coalinga, Calif.
Safety Martavious McCullough and cornerback Tobias Buckner are heading to Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.
For LaGrange, Huzzie, Merritt and Johnson shared a table together Tuesday morning, and next season they’ll be sharing the field together.
Huzzie and Merritt were linebackers for the Grangers, while Johnson was a defensive lineman.
All three players are projected to be linebackers at Kentucky.
“It makes it very special knowing two players from your team are coming to play the same position at the same school,” said Huzzie, an All-State player who helped the Grangers make the Class AAA semifinals last season. “It was a pleasure playing with them in high school, and I know it will be more of a pleasure playing with them in college.”
LaGrange’s Ivan Dowell is going to Tuskegee.
For Callaway, Tigner leaves behind some extraordinary high-school memories, but he’s looking forward to the challenge of playing college football.
“It feels good, knowing I’ll get to play four more years and keep doing what I love to do,” said Tigner, who led Callaway to its first region title last season.
