ATLANTA (AP) — Authorities say two people trapped by burglar bars in an effort to escape have been killed in a house fire in south Fulton County, while a 12-year-old died in a possible arson fire in south Georgia.
Firefighters say a person and a child escaped the burning split-level home on Wednesday in Fulton County. Chief Fire Marshal Keith Padgett says two others were blocked by a security door and died at the scene.
Names of the victims have not been released.
Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner John W. Oxendine says his office is investigating a blaze in Lakeland that left a child dead and two adults seriously injured. He says five others escaped. Oxendine spokesman Glenn Allen identified the 12-year-old as Laquita Bowens. The two adults were airlifted to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta.
Oxendine says the fire around 2 a.m. Wednesday may have been caused by a Molotov cocktail or similar incendiary device.
