An estimated 1,000 people showed up Monday morning at West Georgia Technical College to apply for jobs at Sewon America, a major supplier for the Kia Motors plant in West Point.

The company plans to hire about 300 people by the end of the year and perhaps 700 by 2012.

When he saw the turnout, “I was nervous,” said Sewon human resources specialist Young Kim. “I thought it would be chaotic, but everybody has been very calm and I want to thank everybody who came out”

The $170 million plant in the Callaway South Industrial Park will make stamped chassis and body components, as well as decorative trim pieces.

Test production is expected to start in June and full production in November.
