The economic downturn hasn’t hurt romance - at least not when it comes to Valentine’s flowers, says local florist Madeline Folds.

Folds and co-workers at LaGrange Florist on Youngs Mill Road worked up arrangements of more than 1,000 roses this week, but that was only the beginning.

While red roses, the traditional flower for Valentine’s Day, remain the most popular choice, more and more customers are requesting a mixed bouquet, usually including roses, for their sweethearts. Orchids, tulips, bromeliads and lilies are also popular.

A florist for 30 years, Folds works alongside Debbie Norris, Ginny Helton and others with a combined 91 years in the business.

“We pride ourselves on handmade flower arrangements by veteran artists,” Folds said.

Today and Saturday will be the two heaviest days of the year for florists delivering thousands of flowers in Troup County.

Women won’t be the only ones receiving flowers either, Folds said. Women send them to the men as well.
