MACON, Ga. (AP) — Authorities say two Dodge County inmates snuck out of jail through a tiny air conditioning duct but were captured a few hours after escaping.
Dodge County Sheriff Jeff Hinson says 29-year-old Jeff Joiner and 22-year-old Charlie Mullis tore the wire covering the air vent above their cell and removed an iron rod before escaping early Sunday morning through a 10-inch square opening.
Hinson says the two men now face escape charges.
Joiner, who was being held on theft charges, was arrested by deputies in Albany. Mullis, who was in jail on drug charges, was arrested deputies in Tifton.
Hinson says he brought in a welding crew to place heavier coverings over all the air vents in the decades-old jail that will be replaced by a new building in 2011.
