A School board member has filed a complaint with the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission against her opponent over delinquent fines and taxes the candidate owed.

Sheila Rowe, who has been on the Board of Education for 19 years, announced in a statement Tuesday that she had filed the complaint against school board candidate Dariel Daniel. Daniel, who had outstanding fines against him for failure to file campaign disclosures, said the issue should be taken care of today.

Rowe called for Daniel to pay his fines, file his disclosures and provide evidence he paid his taxes. Daniel had more than $14,000 in overdue taxes he said came from a baseball card business he owned in Troup County in 2002 and taxes from income he earned while living in Texas, but said last month he had taken care of the matter. His accounting firm, J.K. Boatwright, also issued a statement saying the firm was working on the taxes.

According to the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission website at ethics.ga.gov, Daniel had a $65 outstanding fine from his 2004 run for school board and $375 in fines from his current bid for the seat. Daniel was unaware of the fines when contacted by a reporter Tuesday. He later said he contacted the commission and that one of the fees had been waived, notice of his 2004 fee had been sent to the wrong address and he was sending a check overnight to cover the now outstanding $315 for all fees.

A representative at the Campaign Finance Commission was unavailable for comment.

Daniel said he had mailed his campaign contribution to the office and that he has received a total $300 in contributions. He didn’t know that he needed to file contribution reports prior to his qualification as a candidate in May. Two of the $125 fines stemmed from reports due in December and March.

“(Rowe) can file whatever she wants to file, but the total amount is $315 and I’m taking care of that right now,” Daniel said.

Rowe called for Daniel to be investigated for habitual violation of state law requiring the filing of campaign contribution reports. She said Daniel signed an affidavit that he “will not knowingly violate any provisions of the Georgia Election Code” and was “not a defaulter for any federal, state, county, municipal or school system taxes required by such officeholder or candidate.”

“The voters of our district deserve a school board member that follows the law,” Rowe said.

Rowe and Daniel will face face off in a runoff election Aug. 21.

Mr. Daniel is always full of excuses! Why can't he just follow the rules like everyone else! Oh...because he thinks they don't apply to him. He constantly slings mud at the current board, yet accuses them of doing so, accuses them of breaking rules/laws, and look who is caught red- handed. If he can't handle his own affairs, HOW does he think he can handle the schools business - he CAN'T!! He is a bully who thinks he can live by his own rules!!! Not someone I want representing me on the board!!

"Knowingly" is the key word Ms. Rowe, Dariel said he did not KNOW.............

I think I read in the article that he also ran for school board in 2004 and there was a fine stemming from not filing reports then. He's running again and still did not file....I think it's time he "knows" what's required in order to run....and I bet that's where the term "habitual" came into play. But that's just how I read it, I could be wrong.

Wow Shelia,

Are you so desperate that you have decided to get down into the mud? Shame on you. Dariel Daniel is a fine man who wants nothing more than to bring the Troup County schools up to the standards they should be. Except for Debbie Burdette the current school board needs to go. Unfortunately poor voter turnout and voters who could care less didn't bother to vote. If they had, I'm sure a run-off would not have been necessary between you and Dariel. You are very quick to bring allegations against Dariel, but I do believe you have some skeletons in your own closet. Would you want these to come out? Shame on you Shelia for not running on the merits but rather joining the rabble-rousers led by our mayor, county commission chairman, police chief and Drew Ferguson. Shame, shame shame...

Sam, Sam, Sam!

If you think Daniel is a fine man, then you need to go as well. He got fired from Troup Co. Schools years ago because he was not worth his paycheck and has been fuming ever since. If you think the board is such a rotten bunch, why are you not in front of the court house shouting it out. Daniel is one of those guys that can incite the worst in people and you follow along. To phrase you---Shame, Shame, Shame.

"Sent to wrong address". Maybe it was sent to the address he claims to live at which would explain why he didn't get it.

Oh what a tangled web we weave......

Rowe has some untold skeletons in her closet too.

Be careful what you ask or, just to win a seat.

I did vote for her, but not now!!! She just lost my vote for being a jerk.

Got a feeling these things are about to rear their ugly head.

Judge not!!!!!!!

One more time canidates in Troup County......."YOU REAP WHAT YOU SEW"

jg27,

There is a difference in a skeleton and a lawful bill. Please tell me you are so concerned about good schools that you attend every board meeting and try to help. WELL, OF COURSE YOU DON'T! The invention of the internet has allowed for a broader audience of habitual complainer and sad sacks.

By the Way: it's SOW, not SEW!
