Dear Editor:

Columnist Mona Charen sank to an all-time low last Friday (“Akin guilty of having facts wrong, critics worse”)in her rabid devotion to all things Republican.

She actually denied that Todd Akin’s comments about women being able to “shut down” reproduction processes during rape were stupid. My jaw dropped as I read the following gems in paragraph 3: “Is it such an outlandish idea?…didn’t seem out of the realm of possibility to me. Many things about the human body are peculiar and amazing.” She then went on to discuss stress being a possible factor in infertility and seemed to wonder if it couldn’t also be a factor in preventing pregnancy during rape.

In her previous column, she ridiculed the Obamas for reminiscing about their first date in a campaign ad. Well, I’m much more interested in listening to that than anything Todd “staying in the Senate race” Akin has to say. And Mona, if you’re trying to persuade your readers that Republican conservatism is the only true way, I’d suggest spending your time on stances that have at least a whiff of legitimacy.
