STARS shine bright

The annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program is one of the longest running and most respected academic honors in Georgia. Local sponsors, LaGrange Rotary Club, have lent their support to the STAR program for more than 50 consecutive years. Good job, Rotary.

This year’s crop of STAR students and teachers are an impressive and inspiring group. Brilliance is just the beginning.

Each honored student displayed an appreciation for the educational opportunities and the schools, teachers and famil members who have made them possible. The STAR teachers, invariably, were complimented for going above and beyond the classroom role. High expectations, creativity and compassion were a common thread.

Troup County is fortunate to have as its representatives STAR students Will Coggins, LaGrange High and county winner; Sara Austin, Callaway High; Jenna Sargent, Troup High; Cameron Kilpatrick, LaGrange Academy and Kathryne Kelley Scott of Lafayette Christian School and STAR teachers Kenny Moore, LHS; Julie Dalfrey, CHS; Brittany Hale, THS; Janice Ingram, LaGrange Academy and Frances Daniel, LCS.

We have a feeling we’ll be hearing more good things about these promising students and gifted educators.

Heroism appreciated

It’s always worth noting when one human being puts himself at risk to save another.

LaGrange resident David K. Dansby did just that, rousing a sleeping neighbor when a raging fire threatened her home.

City firefighters said that, without Dansby’s quick thinking and strong action, Faye Irwin might have succumbed to smoke inhalation or worse.

“He deserves to be recognized for his heroism,” said fire Lt. Chris Taylor.

We agree. In the proper time and place, a public salute is in order.

Never a dull moment

The name Carol Cain has long been synonymous with creativity, community-mindedness and excellence in the arts and education. Cain’s energy and enthusiasm are well documented, but even by her standards the last couple of weeks - and next week - will be remembered as extraordinary.

Thursday through Sunday of last week, Cain directed the well-received Lafayette Theater Company production of Play it again Sam, her first directorial turn for Lafayette Society for the Performing Arts. On Monday, she was the incomparable “bee bouncer” at the Certified Literate Community Program’s spelling bee. And this coming Friday - Sunday she’ll be on the Callaway Auditorium stage as emcee for the Azalea Storytelling Festival.

All while continuing her “day job” as drama teacher at West Side Magnet School .

Can anybody say, “Bravo!”?

We can. Bravo to the gifted, generous and amazing Carol Cain
