It was a tough opening day for the Callaway Cavaliers.
Facing the Heard County Braves in a Region 5-AA game Tuesday, the Cavaliers lost 11-1.
“We played like we were young and nervous,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said. “We didn’t make the plays we needed to.”
A number of players were making their varsity debuts as starters, and a handful of other key players were either hurt of they’re still playing basketball.
“We’ll just have to get better as the season goes along,” Hubbard said.
The Cavs were hurt early by some key errors.
In the first inning, Callaway committed two errors and gave up three unearned runs.
In the third inning, the Cavaliers made an error on what would have been the third out of the inning, and the next batter hit a three-run home run.
“You have to get that third out when you have the chance,” Hubbard said.
Taylor Kenerley started for the Cavs, and he didn’t allow any earned runs and only walked one batter.
“He gave us a chance to win, we just didn’t give him any support,” Hubbard said.
