At least one hummingbird was spotted enjoying the summery weather at the fourth Annual Hummingbird Festival Golf Tournament Saturday at the Hogansville Golf Club. Birds and golfers alike enjoyed temperatures over 80 degrees.

A recent rainfall had helped green up the course, but a gusty wind prevented anyone from driving home in a bright red 2012 Buick Verano. That big prize was at the course, courtesy of SouthTowne Motors of Newnan, designated for the golfer hitting a hole-in-one on the ninth hole.

The wind was responsible for more than one hook shot into the large oak trees lining the fairway. Local golfer Jaime Pike, who was on the 2010 winning team, once again helped take his team to first place.

Teammates this year were Neal Billingsly, Lance Dorrough and Mark Smith. Pike also won prizes for Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin. Donna McDaniels won the Longest Drive trophy in the Women’s Division.

“We’d love to have more women golfers join us next year,” said Festival Chairman Ralph Lynch. “Even beginners have a lot of fun” putting a team together and getting out on the course. “It’s great exercise and helps a great cause.”

All players received a 2012 Hummingbird Festival tee shirt. Donations from local sponsors, including GMC/SouthTowne Motors, Hibbett Sports, Hubbard & Spinks, and William and Mary’s Sports Memorabilia, among many others, ensured that there were door prizes for each competitor after the scramble.

One sought-after prize was a new golf club that had been customized by local pinstripe artist Clint Robinson. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Hogansville Charitable Trust, the non-profit organization that sponsors the city’s annual Hummingbird Festival.

The 15th annual Festival will be held this Oct. 20 and 21 in downtown Hogansville. This year’s Festival is made possible by the generous sponsorship of West Georgia Physicians.

The next event leading up to the festival is a charity poker tournament fundraiser to be held at Hawg Heaven Restaurant in Hogansville on Oct. 13.
