After winning their past two games to improve to 2-1, the Cavaliers will kick their region schedule off when they face the Jackson-Atlanta Jaguars at Grady Stadium Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Jackson also brings a 2-1 record into the game.
Callaway has never played Jackson, and none of the players have played a game at Grady Stadium, which is located in the midtown area near Piedmont Park.
“It’s going to be a new environment for us,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “We’ll have to go up there and take the next step in our season and handle any adversity. We always talk about that.
“There may be a game played before us. We have to handle that.”
Whatever happens, Wiggins said when the whistle blows, it’s just another football game.
“The bottomline is, it’s a 100-yard field just like everybody else,” Wiggins said. “You just go play.”
The Cavaliers are looking to build on their performances in the past two games, a 28-7 victory over Troup and a 24-21 win over Harris County last week.
Against Harris, the Cavaliers were down 14-7 at the half, but they scored 17 straight unanswered points in the second half to take control.
Wilson Lindsey had two touchdown runs, and Eddie Culpepper added another scoring run.
Chase Freeman also kicked a 25-yard field goal to break a 14-14 tie.
“We always talk about one game at a time, and let’s progress each week,” Wiggins said. “And that’s what we’ve got to do.”
Jackson presents a challenge for Wiggins’ team.
The Jaguars opened their season with back-to-back wins after beating Towers 31-4 and Therrell 14-0.
Jackson lost to South Atlanta 29-22 on Sept. 14 before taking last week off.
One of the players the Cavaliers will be keeping a particularly close eye on is quarterback Shadricus Ferguson, who is a big-time playmaker.
In the win over Towers, Ferguson completed 6-of-6 of his passes for 217 yards with three touchdowns.
Ferguson is also a major threat running the ball.
“He’s very elusive, and he’s got a great arm,” Wiggins said. “We could do a great job in coverage and he can scramble, or we could put pressure on him and he can throw a 40 or 50-yard pass down the field. He’s a great player.”
Jamario O’Neal had four catches for 132 yards in the Towers game. Kendrick Callier is another big-time playmaker for the Jaguars.
He had 233 all-purpose yards against Towers, including more than 100 yards on interception returns with a touchdown.
J’lynn Allen, a starter on offense and defense for the Cavaliers, said the team has to treat Jackson with the ultimate respect.
“We can’t take them lightly,” said Allen, a defensive lineman and tight end. “We have to treat them like they’re the state champs.”
