It was agony to ecstasy for Callaway’s Quay Boddie.
Wednesday night, Boddie was part of a Callaway basketball team that fell in double overtime after losing a 10-point lead in the final minute of regulation.
One day later, Boddie came through with the game-winning hit in the seventh inning to lead the Callaway baseball team to an 8-6 victory over homestanding Taylor County.
The Cavaliers trailed 5-2 heading into the final inning, but they rallied for six runs to even their record at 1-1.
“We battled,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said. “In that last inning, we kind of refused to lose and battled at the plate. We put some good at-bats together in the seventh.”
No one had a bigger at-bat than Boddie.
When Boddie came to the plate, the Cavs had runners on second and third with two outs, and they were still down by a run.
Boddie came through with a base hit up the middle to bring in the tying and go-ahead run.
“He hadn’t practiced, and he gets three hits today and got the game-winning hit,” Hubbard said. “It was a big night for him. I was proud of him.”
Kyle Williams got the seventh-inning rally started with a walk, Dominique Smedley followed with a double, and Tanner Thompson reached on an error to load the bases.
A run scored on a passed ball with one out, and Daniel Crowe’s groundout brought in another run and put runners on second and third for Boddie.
After Boddie’s big hit, Taylor Kenerley drove in a run with a hit, and Boddie later scored on a passed ball.
Thompson struck out the side to work around some base runners in the bottom of the seventh to get the save.
Caleb Shelnutt started and pitched four innings, and Jacob Bonner pitched two innings and got the win.
“I was proud of our pitchers,” Hubbard said. “We only walked two, and that’s what we have to do to have a chance. We have to put it over the plate.”
Callaway will try to even its Region 5-AA record at 1-1 when it visits Macon County today.
