In these hard times, when almost everyone is pinching pennies, a fund-raising “lock up” might be expected to struggle, no matter how worthy the cause.

No so the Feb. 26 “lock up: for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The “jailbirds” other known as the “LaGrange Do-Gooders” raised over $47,000. That’s an impressive sum under any circumstances, but downright amazing considering the economic climate.

That’s partly due to the good cause. The funds will be used to help in the purchase of leg braces and wheelchairs, support crucial research, send local children to MDA summer camp and fund the local MDA Clinic located at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite.

MDA program coordinator Ashley Marcott singled out Chris Boner, resident manager of Bellevue, for assistance in hosting the event at the antebellum mansion. Also Tulla White and his staff at The Basil Leaf for providing breakfast and lunch and the LaGrange Police Department and Troup County Sheriff’s Department for assisting with transportation.

“A very special thanks goes to each and every “LaGrange Do-Gooder” who braved rejection and asked their family, friends and business associates for the ‘bail money’ and to those kind hearted family, friends and associates who said “yes”, we thank you! You are truly heroes to those we serve in the LaGrange area. When the day comes that we find a cure for neuromuscular diseases, you can lift your head high and feel proud that you were a part of saving lives,” Marcott said.

The MDA event was the first of a series of important spring fundraisers. Here’s hoping the giving spirit continues.
