James Edward Hardy Sr. of LaGrange passed away Saturday.

Mr. Hardy, a native of LaGrange, was born November 7, 1928 and was the son of the late Gennie Ware and Oscar Hardy, and was raised by his uncle and aunt, the late Rev. James Richardson and Florence Richardson. James, “The Baby”, as he was affectionately known, was Salutatorian of the 1946 class of East Depot High School. He was voted “Number One Fan of Athletics 1953-1970”. He joined the First Baptist Church on Fannin Street at a very age and served faithfuly as Sunday School teacher and other positions throughout the church.

James was employed at the Princess Theater in LaGrange, Royal Theater in Hogansville, and the Rocket Theater in Lanett as well as LaGrange Coca Cola Company and Daniel Lumber Company. He served at Daniel Lumber for 48 years and retired at the age of 80.

Survivors include his loving and devoted children: James E. Hardy Jr. (Beverly), Cincinnati, Ohio; Phillip L. Hardy (Stephanie), Gwendolyn Hardy Truitt, Barbara A. Hardy, all of LaGrange; and Margie Boone (Dwight), Palmetto, Ga.; devoted friend, Clara Moore and Family; sisters-in-law: Mary “Doll Baby” Moss, LaGrange; Nellie Brown, Cleveland, Ohio; grandchildren: Avius J. Boone (Myron), Toni D. Hardy, Christopher Owens, Brian Hardy(Brianna), Cincinnati, Ohio; Rachael Hardy, Chicago, Ill.; Chad, Alex, and Tiffany Boone, Palmetto, Ga.; niece great-grandchildren; cousins: Marion Towns, Albert Lewis Thornton, Julia Traylor, and Carolyn Hardy, all of LaGrange; J.T. Thornton, Gwendolyn Cranford, Atlanta, Ga; Sanders Hardy and Harvey Thornton, Detroit, Mich.; loving, extended family who called him “Dad”, and supportive family: the Hardy, McCamey and Thornton family.

James was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mamie M. Hardy; brothers: Forrest Hardy and J. O. Hardy; sisters, Mary Jean Hardy and Louise Hardy; and brothers-in-law: Frank, Bennie and Johnny Moore.

The Celebration of Life Service will be Thursday at Noon at the First Baptist Church on Fannin Street. Dr. Clarence Sams, Rev. Johnnie Freeman, and Rev. W. Craig Thornton will officiate. Burial will be in Shadowlawn Cemetery.

The family will be at their home at 202 1/2 Union Street.
