The Spencer Greenwaves had the lead in Tuesday’s game at Callaway after scoring an unearned run in the top of the first inning.

The good times didn’t last for the visitors from Columbus, though.

The Callaway Cavaliers, playing their first home game of the season, sent 16 batters to the plate in the first inning, and by the time the carnage ended, they were ahead 12-1.

Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard decided to use the rest of the game as a chance for everyone on the roster to get a chance to play, and the Cavs went on to claim a 14-1 victory.

Callaway (3-1 overall) improved to 2-1 in Region 5-AA.

“It’s always good to see our young kids get some playing time,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said. “A game like this, you hope you have something good come out of it.”

Callaway’s two pitchers. senior Taylor Kenerley and freshman Brew Parker, combined to no-hit the Greenwaves.

Kenerley pitched the first two innings, and Parker tossed the final two innings.

Parker closed strong by striking out the side in the fifth and final inning.

The game ended early because of the 10-run mercy rule.

“I was proud of the way Brew Parker threw,” Hubbard said. “It was his first varsity game, and he did a good job.”

Kyle Williams got the first-inning onslaught started with a double, and B.J. Drake, Quay Boddie, Dominique Smedley, Tanner Thompson and Caleb Shelnutt each had hits in the inning.

Smedley’s hit was a two-run double.

The Cavs were aided by four walks and a multitude of errors.

The Cavs scored single runs in the second and fourth innings to finish the scoring.

Callaway hosts Greenville in a doubleheader today, with Game 1 set for 4:30 p.m.
