Vernon Street could have a new look by this weekend. The first span of a pedestrian bridge at LaGrange College is scheduled to be installed Saturday morning.

To accommodate the work, motorists will find a detour. The portion of Vernon Street between Park Avenue and Broad Street will be closed from sunrise Saturday to sunset Sunday. It also will be closed from sunrise to sunset March 22, March 28-29, April 4 and, if needed, April 5.

Eastbound traffic headed toward LaGrange will be detoured left onto Broad Street - normally a no-left-turn intersection - then re-turned to Vernon Street via Springdale Drive or other cross streets. The reverse is true for westbound traffic, which will be rerouted to Broad Street, then back to Vernon Street.

Forrest Avenue will remain open and will be accessible via Broad Street, but will be closed off to Vernon Street.

The bridge will link the college’s new library with parking across Vernon Street.
