From staff reports

“LaGrange and Troup County in World War II” is the new exhibit opening at Legacy Museum on Main on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. The exhibit features photographs, news clippings, uniforms, weapons, and much more, all dating from 1941 to 1945.

The exhibit was prepared by guest curators Isabelle Knight, Bobby Cammon, and Terry Hoppe. All of the materials relate to men and women who served in World War II who were originally from the area, who later lived here or have family living in the area.

The servicemen, shown in the exhibit mostly in uniform, represent all walks of life – from service station attendants to workers at Dixie, Dunson, or Callaway Mills to store clerks and surgeons. Knight and Cammon gathered the original photos for the exhibit in 2008 for display at the LaGrange Symphony’s Memorial Day Concert. The exhibit has expanded significantly since then, thanks to donations and loans from many families in the area.

“It is a great honor for Legacy Museum on Main and the Troup County Archives to host this exhibit,” said Kaye Minchew, director. “The sacrifices and courage of the Greatest Generation of the World War II era needs to be remembered. We are fortunate that some of these people are still alive today. Seeing pictures of them as young soldiers, 17 or 18 years old, gives you even great appreciation for what they have lived through. It really does remind you why the United

States is such a great country.”

Sunday’s open house at Legacy Museum will start at 2 p.m. with members of the Marine Corps League leading the Pledge of Allegiance. At 3 p.m., Captain Joe Fagundes will fly over downtown, weather permitting, in his restored 1943 Navy SNJ5, made by North American Aircraft.

At 5 p.m., the open house will close with a prayer remembering those who died in service and the playing of taps. Three World War II era vehicles will be parked in front of the museum throughout the day.

Minchew encouraged people to attend the open house and return at their convenience to spend time at the exhibit.

“We’re hoping people will come back again between now and August and take the time to look at all the faces of the young men and women and read their stories. We are especially happy because before our renovations in 2008, we never had space to display such an exhibit. We are also glad we can make it available free of charge so that everyone can enjoy the exhibit.”

Legacy Museum is located at 136 Main Street in LaGrange. The Troup County Historical Society recently renovated the old 1917 LaGrange National Bank building which has housed the Troup County Archives since 1983. The Archives is now located on second floor of the building and will also be open during the open house on Sunday.

Legacy Museum’s permanent exhibit, “Wheels of Change”, will also be open on Sunday. The exhibits are open free of charge and the public is invited.

“LaGrange and Troup County In World War II” will be on display in the Charter Foundation Rotating Gallery until early August 2009.
