Organizations who donated earlier this year to keep GED classes available in Hogansville got to see the fruits of their labor when five graduates of the program were recognized recently.

“Thank you for what you did,” said Susan Prestridge, lead instructor for Troup County’s GED program, offered through West Georgia Technical College.

When the college had trouble coming up with the money to keep the program going earlier this year, several donors, including the Certified Literate Community Program, City of Hogansville, Hogansville Charitable Trust and Carter’s chipped in to keep the classes.

Many residents of Hogansville don’t have adequate transportation to get to LaGrange or elsewhere to complete their educations.

“You engaged in something beautiful for Hogansville,” said Bill Prescott, who is widely credited for getting the fundraising effort moving.

Since the classes were kept open, there currently are 13 students and five recently graduated and received their GEDs, said Janice Morrow, who recently became the instructor in Hogansville. She recently retired after 30 years as a teacher in private schools.

“I see how much this program is needed in this community,” she said. “These people have abilities they cannot show because they don’t have the right credential.”

One of the graduates, Cassie Creech, had “phenomenal” GED test scores, Morrow said.

“I had no idea this would affect my life in so many ways,” Creech said about receiving her GED. She told donors and fellow classmates her confidence in herself has been restored and she’s recently quit smoking and reconnected with her father.

While she’s searching for a job, she’s helping Morrow as a volunteer assistant with the class.

“I wouldn’t have been able to travel anywhere else to take this class,” Creech said.
