Lafayette Christian’s girls’ basketball team returned to its winning ways on Tuesday, defeating visiting Georgia-Alabama Christian School in a 51-17 blowout.

The Cougar boys were scheduled to play after the girls, but GACS was not able to field a team for the game.

The win gives the girls a 3-5 record as coach Paula Johnson’s team rebounded from a 60-17 loss at the hands of Flint River on Monday night.

The Lady Cougars did it by scoring, stealing the ball and forcing turnover after turnover against the Lady Lions, who only scored five points the entire first half.

Lafayette led after the first quarter 26-4 and 35-5 at the intermission.

GACS outscored the Lady Cougars 7-3 in the third quarter, but Johnson had already substituted throughout much of the game by this point.

Despite the big win, Johnson said there’s still plenty of work to do.

“We still got to work on those free throws, rebounding and boxing out,” Johnson said. “But hey, we played good considering we had a blowout last night against Flint River and we came back real strong and played our ball game.”

The win gave Johnson the opportunity to play some of her players that normally might see little playing time in a tight ball game.

She was especially proud of the effort guard Veronica Prince gave coming off the bench.

“She stepped up her game considering she doesn’t get a lot of playing time,” Johnson said of Prince. “This will build up her confidence and it was a good chance for her.”

The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Morgan Douglas with 24 points.

Teammates Mackenzie Alder had 10 points, and Courtney Lowery and Prince each had 6.

Both Lafayette Christian teams are off until January.
