The Callaway Cavaliers’ six-game winning streak will be put to the test Tuesday.
Pike County, one of the state’s elite Class AA teams, will visit Callaway Tuesday for a Region 5-AA showdown.
Since dropping their season opener to Heard County, the Cavs have won six in a row, and they’re 3-1 in region play.
Pike County also dropped its first game - to St. Cloud from Florida - and the Pirates have won 10 straight games since.
The Pirates are 5-0 in region play.
“It’ll be fun. I feel like we don’t have a whole lot of pressure,” Callaway head coach Dusty Hubbard said. “They’ll roll in here No. 2 in the state in the coach’s poll. They’ve beaten some good teams.”
Callaway and Pike have set the standard in Region 5-AA in recent years, with the teams usually battling it out for the championship.
But while Pike returned a number of starters from last year’s team that went 23-6, Callaway basically started over after losing every starter.
The inexperience hasn’t been a problem yet, though.
On Friday, Callaway extended its win streak with a 5-0 victory behind the pitching of Tanner Thompson.
“We’re looking forward to it,” Thompson said of the Pike game. “We know we’re going in as the under dog. We think we can pull it out if we play hard.”
The Cavaliers have really had things rolling of late, outscoring their past five opponents 72-1.
This will be Callaway’s biggest test of the young season.
“We just have to relax and play, and if we get a chance late try to win,” Hubbard said.
