The LaGrange Lady Grangers finally met their match.

After opening the season with 10 straight wins, LaGrange was hoping to make it 11 in a row Saturday night in the championship game of the Lady Tiger Holiday Classic at Auburn High.

Instead, it was a strong Valley team capturing a 68-61 victory to claim the tournament championship.

It was a big-time matchup between two powerful teams.

Valley improved to 13-1 with the victory, while LaGrange now stands at 10-1.

“We gave them a really good game,” LaGrange head coach Jan Jones said. “We had a couple of times where our defense collapsed on us and they scored. They hit a couple of threes, and we couldn’t hit a three. We didn’t hit one all night.”

In the end, Jones said “when it mattered, they hit the big shot.”

Steara Mitchell led LaGrange with 16 points, and Brittany Tatum and KaBrenna Smith added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Valley’s Audrianna Walker had a big game with 27 points.

It was tied 27-27 at the half, and Valley went up by as many as 10 points in the second half before LaGrange got within one.

Valley was able to pull away late for the win.

“We just couldn’t hang on,” Jones said.
