The Callaway Cavaliers maintained their spot atop the Region 4-AAA standings with a 66-56 road victory over Jackson-Atlanta on Tuesday.

The Cavaliers (11-7 overall) moved to 10-1 in the region and remained a game ahead of Douglass.

The Cavaliers were led in scoring by senior Nehemiah Jones, who poured in 21 points.

Sophomore Terry Godwin followed with 15 points and senior Brandon Bridges added 12.

Callaway coach Terry Hayes said his team’s full-court, man-to-man defense was the difference for the Cavaliers, who were able to pull away early and rebound after a disappointing loss to Greenville on Saturday night.

The Lady Cavaliers, meanwhile, have bounced back nicely from their first losing streak of the season.

After dropping back-to-back games to Chapel Hill and Douglass last week, the Lady Cavaliers have answered the bell in fine style, first with a win over Greenville on Saturday, and then on Tuesday with a 46-27 victory over Jackson-Atlanta.

Tuesday’s win moved the Lady Cavaliers to 12-6 overall, and 7-4 against Region 4-AAA competition with three regular-season games to go.

“We started off slow, and we ended up taking care of business,” Callaway head coach Deyano Martin said. “I was pleased. I was proud of them.”

It was close early, with the Lady Cavaliers holding a 6-5 lead after the first quarter, but they were up 21-12 at the half, and 40-21 through three periods.

“Jackson’s not a bad team. They have a lot of height. We had to deal with that all night,” Martin said. “We did a good job, put a little pressure on them. We finally got some good looks and some easy baskets.”

Monica Jackson paced Callaway with 12 points, Tityuana Gates added nine points, and Tanesha Johnson scored eight points.

“I’m proud of them,” Martin said. “We bounced right back in the Greenville game, and then we came back tonight. We’ll just continue to move forward.”

Callaway will host Haralson County Friday night.
